The perfect dessert for an Indian or Asian meal

When I needed a dessert to end off a rather rich curry menu I took my basic yoghurt mousse and added spices including turmeric, honey and fresh ginger.

Honey adds sweetness and fresh ginger adds stunning flavour

The colour was stunning and the flavours delicate. It was SO successful that I simply had to share it with you.

This recipe takes a little time, but as it needs to set it must preferably be made a day in advance. Simply top it with fruit, honey or nuts just before serving!

Recipe: Turmeric and Honey, Yoghurt Mousse

I use a Turmeric blend (see details below) in this recipe, but also give you the option of making up your own blend.

Turmeric, a healthy trend

Turmeric has been a food trend for a few years now, but it has been in Asian and Middle Eastern diets for centuries giving curry its golden yellow colour. It is used as a fabric dye and as a medicinal herb.

Recently its health benefits have been recognised in the Western diet and every outlet selling healthy options are offering turmeric smoothies, lattes, chai and everything else you can imagine. A few days ago I even had a turmeric poached egg…. not any taste difference, but it looked exotic!

Combat aches and pains

Despite very few clinical tests to prove its value, turmeric is said to be a super anti-inflammatory agent. Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The only problem is that most turmeric contains very small quantities of curcumin so for it to be effective you need to take extraordinarily large ‘doses’. The second problem is that it is not easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Black pepper, which contains piperine, enhances its absorption, if you really expect some results don’t forget to add a twist of pepper.

I must admit that for some years now, we have had the ‘holy trinity’ of ‘good spices: ground cinnamon, turmeric and chilli’, standing alongside our blender! Let’s hope that it will combat any aches and pains that accompany the joys of being over 60! My view is that ancient medicines must have some value and we will never know if we don’t try. Anyway, if it does not cure, the flavours are delicious!

Recently we were introduced to a superior product that has been formulated by a pharmacist. Golden Life Turmeric Blend has a delicious flavour and the spices in the right proportion to hopefully have an impact on our diet.

We incorporate our daily dose in various ways. I add it to soups and we stir it into our morning fruit salad or add it to smoothies.

I will be posting more recipes using turmeric, but will always add the alternative of adding your own spice mix.
